At a panel discussion held at the 2008 Consumer Electronics show by NBC, Microsoft, AT&T, and several digital filtering companies said “the time was right to start filtering copyrighted content at the network level.”

See the NYTimes blog for the full story and chilling news on your ability to post and access unfiltered information online.

Heading Down a Slippery Slope
While this might be one of the most effective ways to stop illegal content from being spread on the internet, it certainly sets us down a dangerous path.  One of the best things about web is that it is open and unfiltered.  Filtering content at the network level is going to put a lot of power in the hands of these big corporations, and I'll surprised if that power doesn't get abused.
